Emadeddin Baghi Remains in Solitary Confinement

RAHANA Prisoners’ Rights Unit – Emadeddin Baghi was arrested the day after Ashura (December 28th 2009) for his interview with Grand Ayatollah Montazeri two years ago. The interview was aired by BBC Persian and largely distributed online after Ayatollah Montazeri’s death.

In December 2009, Baghi’s family told Saham News that not only does interviewing the Ayatollah not constitute as a criminal offense, but Baghi was not aware at the time of the interview when and by whom it would be aired.

According to Baghi’s family, the interview was a one-time event which occurred in the past; therefore there are no present & existing grounds to justify fears of future conspiracies or attempts by Baghi to destroy evidence if released.

Baghi’s family said that his detention is unjustified, and even if there were issues with the interview, he could have addressed them in the court of law. Baghi’s family has asked the prosecutor to put an end to his solitary confinement and authorize prison visits. They have not received an answer yet.
