The attack and arrest of the Nabavi Family

The attack and arrest of the Nabavi Family in the cities of Semnan and Qom by agents of the Ministry of Intelligence

According to reports received by Human Rights and Democracy Activists in Iran, agents of the Ministry of Intelligence attacked the Nabavi family in Qom and Semnan, and arrested Mehri Nabavi in Qom and Seyyed Zohour Nabavi in Semnan. They were transferred to solitary confinement in the prison of the Ministry of Intelligence.

On the morning of Wednesday February 10, Ministry of Intelligence agents in Semnan, under the command of Erfani (the head investigator for the Ministry of Intelligence), along with two others, raided 51 year old Seyyed Zohour Nabavi’s house while he was asleep. They arrested him and sent him to solitary confinement in Semnan Central Prison. The agents also inspected the house and took away his computer and other personal items. Erfani’s behaviour was very aggressive and inhumane. He also threatened Nabavi’s wife and told her that they will arrest her as well.

It should be reminded that Seyyed Zohour Nabavi was a political prisoner in the 1980s. He was sentenced to four years in prison for articles he wrote for Sarzamin-e Ariyayee Magazine. He was released after two years and eight months due to international pressure.

On Tuesday February 9, 2010 the agents of the Ministry of Intelligence raided Ali Nabavi’s house in the city of Qom and arrested his wife Mehri Nabavi. She was taken to the prison of the Ministry of Intelligence. Ali Nabavi was already arrested and he is currently in the custody of the Ministry of Intelligence.

The inspectors of the Ministry of Intelligence also summoned three other members of the Nabavi family to the Intelligence Office in Semnan. They were interrogated and threatened for 12 hours.

Currently, two other members of the Nabavi family, Atefeh Nabavi and Seyyed Zia Nabavi, are detained in Evin Prison. During the past few months, the Nabavi family was raided many times by Ministry of Intelligence agents in the cities of Tehran, Semnan, and Qom. Some of the Nabavis were bailed out by paying a large amount of money, and some of them are “under heavy suspension.”

A large number of people were arrested on February 11, both in Tehran and in other cities. Intelligence agents of the Revolutionary Guards concentrated mostly on arresting former prisoners, especially those who were imprisoned in the 1980s.

Human Rights and Democracy Activists in Iran (HRDAI) condemn the vast attacks and arrests that took place in the days before February 11, 2010. HRDAI asks the Secretary General and High Commissioner for Human Rights and other international organizations to hold an emergency meeting at the UN Security Council to investigate the crimes against the human race committed in the Velayat-e Faghih regime of Iran.
