Civil Unrest Continues in Lar: Over 50 Detained

Situation critical in Lar as arrests and detainment continue

The following is based on a witness account from a Lar resident.

A number of people were injured on February 7, 2010 in the continuation of clashes between the people of Lar and Special Guard forces.

People attacked and set fire to the city hall building, and numerous documents were reportedly destroyed in the fire. Four cars and two motorcycles were also set on fire.

In the eastern part of Lar (old Lar), banks were also attacked and bank documents were thrown onto the streets.

A number of people suffered gunshot wounds. The Special Guard forces reportedly prevented the wounded to be taken to hospitals.

The Special Guard forces had increased their numbers and local forces were also dressed in Special Guard uniform. At 2:00am, Special Guard forces raided people’s homes and arrested over 50 residents.

The people have been ordered to open their shops and business by Lar’s Friday Prayers Imam. Many local shops and businesses have been on strike in solidarity with the protesters. The civil unrest, which has intensified since the beginning of February, is a result of the people’s discontent over the decision to turn Gerash, a nearby village, into a city.
