Extensive arrests of political and student activists in Khorramabad

HRANA News: The condition of political and student activists in Khorramabad is worsening and following up on prisoners is becoming increasingly difficult.

According to “Until the Release of Green Prisoners,” Farhad Sharafi, a civil activist and researcher in Lorestan, was arrested at his workplace by security forces on December 2, 2009.

Sharafi is a master’s student in architecture at Tarbiat Modarres University in Tehran. He is also active in women’s rights issues. So far, he has published a number of research articles on the issue of women. Despite various attempts to follow up on his current condition, there has been no information available on him or one of his family members Farshad.

Abbas Dalvand, a reformist journalist from Lorestan and principal of the now shut down weekly publication titled Lorestan, was arrested on December 5, 2009 and detained at Parsiloon prison in Khorramabad. According to reports, Dalvand endured intense pressures following his arrest.

Dalvnad was imprisoned once before for two months in the year 2000. During the time of the arrest, Lorestan (weekly publication) was shut down. Dalvand was sentenced to a five-year ban from social and media-related activism.

Moreover, Siamak Nadali, the former editor-in-chief of the Islamic Association in Lorestan, as well as Kaveh Azadi and Massoud Nasiri were arrested on February 11th. Nadali remains under arrest.

After arresting Nadali, the officials immediately investigated his father’s home as well as the home of one of his close friends. Nadali has been banned from continuing his education and had received warnings from the Revolutionary Guards prior to his arrest and interrogation. There is no information on Siamak Nadali’s condition.

Siamak Biranvand, a political activist in Khorramshahr (a city in the province of Khuzestan in southwestern Iran), has been arrested. Biranvand is a political science student and was actively involved in Mir Hossein Mousavi’s campaign.
