Reporter Noushin Jafari in Evin Prison


The Committee of Human Rights Reporters – On Saturday February 20, 2010, civil activist and journalist Noushin Jafari called home and spoke to her family about her detention in the general ward of Evin prison. Noushin Jafari told her family that she has not yet been interrogated and she is not aware of her charges or why she is being detained.

Noushin Jafari, a reporter for Etemaad newspaper, was arrested by security guards from her home at midnight on February 3, 2010. Her house was searched and her belongings, including her personal computer, were confiscated.

Noushin Jafari does not have a background in political activism. Before being arrested, she was busy working as a reporter.

In recent months, there has been a wave of arrests of political and civil activists, journalists in the fields of arts and culture, and literary critics. Journalist Hassan Zohouri who worked for the Cultural Heritage news agency, and writer and literary critic Khalil Darmanaki were among the recent detainees. Hassan Zohouri was released on February 20, 2010, but Khalil Darmanaki remains in prison under the control of security forces.
