A message from political prisoners in Evin: The Judiciary is a Revolutionary Guard Puppet

On Thursday [February 4, 2010], Evin political prisoners issued a statement and labeled the Judiciary “a puppet in the hands of the police state, especially the Revolutionary Guard.” This statement was smuggled out of prison. The writers of this letter have also asked the people to have a ‘Green Presence’ in all major cities.

Here is the complete statement of the political prisoners:

Dear People of Iran,

We, the political prisoners of Iran, are like a dark spot on the face of this regime. This dark spot needs to be evermore exposed. The gathering of the families of prisoners, the support of human rights organizations, and the widespread news regarding political prisoners in the media will greatly help expose this dark spot.

This is shameful for a regime that in its thirty-first anniversary imprisons so many based on their thoughts. The world is changing. A regime that has infiltrated every cell of our society and our people is falling apart.

Even though during the first days after the election the people were worried, clueless, and hopeless in the streets of Tehran, the protests have now, after only a few months, become more organized and have spread to other cities as well. Criticism of the ‘Supreme Leadership’ and the regime is now more direct. The sacred aura that the regime had created around itself throughout all these years has now been shattered. Those regime pundits who symbolize violence, treason, lies, and deception are more isolated. These days, it is hard to find people who are willing to defend this regime in its entirety.

Once in a while they transfer some political prisoners from one ward to another or they transfer them from one prison to another. Although we once would have attributed this to an attempt to re-interrogate them and bring about new accusations against them, the experiences of the 1980s and also the experiences of Latin American countries tell us that the result of these transfers could be the annihilation of the political prisoners.

Pressures on the prisoners, killing witnesses of crimes, and the disappearance of social and political activists are all methods that the world witnessed during 1980s. The Iranian dictatorship is familiar with these methods all too well and tries to use them to torture political prisoners and their families. We believe that using these methods will eventually have no result other than the further shaming of the regime; otherwise we would still be seeing regimes in power like Neron in Argentina, Pinochet in Chile, Franco in Spain, Pahlavi in Iran, and Saddam in Iraq.

We are not afraid to turn into Green Movement Martyrs in the prisons of this regime. At the same time, in order to further discredit this regime and stop them from creating a tragedy similar to the executions of 1980s, we ask that international monitors and representatives of independent human rights organizations visit prisons in Iran to ensure the health of all political prisoners.

Another important point that we would like to discuss with the dear people of Iran is that Mir Hossein Mousavi, in his latest talk, has pointed out that the Judiciary only communicates within its own network.

We, the political prisoners, have heard many times from our interrogators that they are the ones ordering the judges around and that they are proud of it. The interrogators in the beginning of interrogations announce the prison terms to the prisoners and declare that they will ask those terms from the judges. It is no wonder that the exact same prison terms are issued by the judges a few months later.

Mir Hossein Mousavi has said: ”We need to find out whether it is the judges who decide or the security forces. For a Judiciary whose independence has been stressed in our constitution, we now have to see how much power it has and how much its respect is honored.”

We, as prisoners who have been imprisoned for the past eight months as hostages of a security state, would like to respond to Mr. Mousavi as follows: Have no doubt that the Judiciary is only a puppet in the hands of the security forces, especially the Revolutionary Guard. It has reached a point where some judges, while reading a verdict, will state: “We have issued this verdict based on a request by your interrogator.”

At the end, while welcoming the latest words by Mr. Mousavi and Mr. Karoubi, we invite the Iranian people to have a ‘Green Presence’ in all the cities on February 11th, Revolution Day.
