Literary Writer Khalil Darmanki still detained in Evin after 40 days


The Committee of Human Rights Reporters - Since nearly 40 days of detention, writer and literary critic Khalil Darmanki has been detained in ward 209 of Evin Prison. He has had only a few opportunities to call his family.

Reports indicate that Khalil Darmanki’s trial will take place some time late Bahman [between February 13-19, 2010].

In the last ten years, Khalil Darmanaki has written articles and booklets on literature and literary reviews for publications such as Asr Azadegan, Shargh, Etemad Melli, and other magazines considered culturally significant.

According to a friend, “Khalil was never involved in political activism because he [observed] cultural changes through his writings.”

In the early 2000’s, Khalil Darmanki and a group of friends launched a magazine that covered topics pertaininng to [Iranian] culture.

According to a source, “Khalil Darmanki was [also] involved in the making of a literary and cultural review booklet on Iran that turned into a big project that entailed extensive research. His language of literary criticism is clear and innovative, and in my opinion, he is one of the best recent critics in Iran.”

On December 27, 2009, following the Ashura-related events, Khalil Darmanki was arrested. Since then, he has been detained in Evin prison.

In recent weeks, a group of poets, writers, journalists, and activists released a statement to protest Khalil Darmanki’s detention.
