The danger of execution looms for 20 year old Mohammad Valian

Reporters and Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA): 20 year old Mohammad Amin Valian has been sentenced to death. The court has based its decision on Ayatollah Makarem Shirazi’s speech in which he labeled those who had desecrated Ashura as “Mohareb” (Fighters against God; an offense that carries the death penalty in Sharia law).

Mohammad Valian was arrested following the Ashura protests on December 27, 2009.

The court has cited Ayatollah Shirazi’s speech as a fatwa (a binding religious decree), and as a result, has sentenced 20 year old Mohammad Valian to death.

Neday-e Sabz-e Azadi website has reported that Valian’s death sentence has been held in the appeals court, and it can be carried out any day.

Last month, the Revolutionary Prosecutions Office issued a statement announcing the execution order of one of the nine Ashura defendants.

Valian, who is an active member of the Islamic Student Union of Damqan University and Mir Hossein Moussavi’s student campaign, was raised in a religious and revolutionary family. His political activism has always been within the legal boundaries, and he has no ties to hostile opposition or illegal groups. He was arrested on the sole charge of carrying a small rock on December 27th.

It is noteworthy that this news has not been confirmed to this day by official or judiciary sources.
