Amnesty International urges Iran to stop execution of Kurdish prisoner

Ehsan Fatahian

Amnesty International called on Islamic Republic authorities to stop the execution of Ehsan Fatahian who is scheduled to be hanged tomorrow Wednesday.

Ehsan Fatahian is a Kurdish political prisoner who has been convicted of “acting against national security” and “sedition through membership in armed political groups.”

The 28-year-old Fatahian was arrested last spring and was primarily sentenced to ten years imprisonment in exile; however, in Kurdistan appeals court the charge of “sedition” was added to his charges and his sentence increased to execution.

Amnesty International calls on Ayatollah Larijani, Iran’s head of judiciary to reduce Fatahian’s sentence on the grounds that he was not tried “fairly.”

Amnesty International also expresses concern over the possible execution of two other Kurdish activists, Shirkouh Moarefi and Habibollah Latifi.

The family of Ehsan Fatahian has also written a letter to Ayatollah Larijani claiming that their son has been convicted unjustly. They urge the head of judiciary to stop his sentence and attend to his case in person. According to the letter, if Ayatollah Larijani even takes a glance at the file, the young man’s fate would change.
